Ballhawking Goals 2009

This will be short and to the point… Some of these are not
extremely realistic. Remember, I set my goals high. I realize that I probably
will not attain half of these, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try!

  • Get
    150+ baseballs in 2009
  • Have
15 out of the 150 be game balls (5 game homers, 5 foul balls, 5 third
    outs)
  • Catch one
    milestone HR (1st career, 100th, 200th,
    etc…)
  • 3
    pieces of game-used equipment
  • 15-20
    All star autographs
  • Break
my Milwaukee record (14) with 15
    baseballs in one game
  • Catch
a grand slam to complete the HR cycle (1 run, 2 run, 3 run and GS)
  • (Late addition) Snag a ground rule double

Homeruns I’m actively seeking:

    1. Adam
      Dunn
    2. Another
      Ryan Braun
    3. Rick
      Ankiel
    4. Yovani
Gallardo/Manny Parra/Seth McClung (I’ll guarantee one of them hits a
      homerun this season)
    5. Lance
      Berkman

Rosemont Sports Show

A ways back, almost 6 or 7 months now, I had the pleasure of meeting Nick “Happy Youngster” Yohanek at Miller Park. We sit in the same section and do the same thing: ballhawk. I cannot recall what first brought our attention to each other, it was probably something trivial. Nonetheless, we became good friends.

Fast forward to November 23rd, 2008… Nick and I are on course for Rosemont, Illinois for the 37th Annual Chicago Sun-Times Sports Collectibles Convention. This was sure to be a blast! Nick retrieved Matt Holliday’s 19th career HR, when he was in Pittsburgh. Something ballhawks like to do with “gamers”, or baseballs that saw action in an official MLB game, is have them signed by the player who hit or threw it. Holliday was one of the scheduled signers who actually showed up (looking at you, Dennis Eckersley).

Here are a few pictures from the whole experience:

Here is the man himself, Happy Yohanek, getting his parking pass:

Here is what we saw when Matt Holliday was announced:

Holliday had no line! Nick, Matt and I chewed the fat for a second, and the meet and greet was over as fast as it started. Here are Nick and I with Mr. Holliday:

Thank God I forgot to comb my hair, right?!?!

Nick got a ball signed by Paul Molitor, as well:

This was valued at $80,000-$100,000. Mickey Mantle game worn jersey from one of the World Series games he played in:

Bonus points for anyone who can identify the weird thing in this picture:

Overall, I had a great time down in flatland. The all the Cubbie blue and red gave me a headache for a while, but then I remembered what teams actually won a game in this year’s playoffs. It went away quickly. Thank you Nick Yohanek and thank you Matt Holliday!
